DREW’S NEWS

Greetings from Chattanooga,

There is a distinct difference between "announcing" a vision and "executing" one, and this week in Chattanooga, the scale feels like it’s finally tipping toward the latter. For years, we’ve talked about the "potential" of our quantum assets, our logistics leadership and our emerging energy infrastructure poised for next-century benefit. But as we move deeper into 2026, the local conversation has shifted from "what if" to "what now."

We’re seeing that shift in the transparency of the Times Free Press editorial on the true value of local journalism, and in strategic plans that treats our talent pipeline like a high-stakes industrial roadmap. Whether it’s Dynamo Ventures proving that local VC leadership can pick global winners in robotics or Brickyard portfolio company Harmony embedding their AI directly onto factory floors, our city is, quite literally, executing.

I sense the momentum is shifting around us. I’m curious if you feel it too.

See you around town,

Drew

🚀 Connections + Congrats

Tennessee House at SXSW: We had a strong contingent of Tennessee startups and ecosystem supporters representing at SXSW 2026. From health-tech to AI, our regional founders were in Austin to prove that Tennessee a viable engine for innovation right now.

Nanoengineering for the Tech Corridor: UTC is doubling down on deep tech with the launch of a new Nanoengineering Center. This is a strategic move to fuel the regional tech corridor, providing the specialized research and talent needed for the next generation of advanced manufacturing and materials science.

Securing the Grid: In a major partnership for regional infrastructure, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and EPB are collaborating to derisk the American power grid. By leveraging Chattanooga’s unique fiber and quantum assets as a testbed, they are solving critical vulnerabilities before they impact the national energy supply. These are local partnerships with national (and international) energy implications.

Quantum Activation Series: CO.LAB recently hosted their first Quantum Activation Series event at UTC. The focus is shifting toward "Quantum in Action"—showing local business leaders how to practically prepare for a quantum-enabled future. This was a great event with a nice mix of enterprise, education and entrepreneurial representation on both the panels and in the audience.

One of the Quantum event’s themes was how Chattanooga is moving beyond the "cool hardware" phase. New initiatives are focusing heavily on how we advance local talent so that the high-paying jobs created by this tech actually stay in the hands of the local workforce.

$50k Boyd Venture Challenge: The Spring 2026 Boyd Venture Challenge is officially live. If you know a student founder in the UT System with a serious prototype, they have until April 3rd to apply for a slice of $50,000 in seed funding.

2026 Tech Vision Initiative: The Business & Economic Research Center at MTSU has pivoted its focus for 2026 toward "Future Readiness." Rather than a static report, they are running a live research platform focused on how AI is leveling the playing field in Tennessee’s workforce. They’ll be sharing the full data set at their Tech Vision 2026 Summit on April 10th.

Safe Parking for Freight Alley: Nearly $500M in federal funding is being deployed to solve the national truck parking shortage. For a logistics hub like Chattanooga, this is a major safety and efficiency win for the thousands of drivers moving through our region every day, and our own Truck Parking Club was featured in this USA Today piece on this growing issue.

Dynamo Ventures shared a milestone for one of their standout portfolio companies. SVT Robotics has expanded its partnership with DHL, using their SOFTBOT Platform to slash robotics integration times from months to just days across DHL's global warehouses.

The Data Center Boom Backlash: As AI demands more power, we’re seeing a significant US pushback against massive data center projects. This trend is something local energy leaders and tech firms will need to watch closely as infrastructure demands collide with community pushback. Mayor Kelly spoke on this topic at SXSW over the weekend, and it was pickup up by The Economic Times.

Introducing an acquisition newsletter for the serious buyer

I’ve started a separate weekly acquisition brief called Letter of Intent, a highly-curated brief at regional and remote cash-flowing SMBs for serious buyers.

As some of you may know, I cut my teeth in publishing and journalism, and I hold the “fourth estate” in high value. Chattanooga Times Free Press Editor-in-Chief Allison Gerber penned an op-ed over the weekend worthy of sharing. What News is Really Worth is a transparent look at the "hidden" costs of providing local accountability. Gerber argues that while social media provides information for free, it doesn't provide the verified, resource-intensive reporting that uncovers corruption or tracks local tax spending. A single investigative piece can take hundreds of hours of work—a reality that is increasingly difficult to sustain without a shift in how readers value and pay for local content. It’s a call to action for the community to see a subscription not as a "product" purchase, but as an investment in the city’s civic health.
